History and Awards

C. Henry Hottum

(1913-2006)

Mr. Hottum retired in 1977 as the Administrator of the Methodist Hospitals in Memphis, where he worked for 30 years. He is the past president of the Memphis Kiwanis Club, past president of the Tennessee Hospital Association, and a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators. He was a long time member of Christ United Methodist Church. (Except from Mr. Hottum’s obituary from the The Commercial Appeal on 10/17/2006.)

A Rememberance of Henry Hottum by Carolyn Moffitt

As we research the history of the Healthcare Financial Management Association it becomes apparent that HFMA national awards and commemorations are few and have been reserved for the most prominent founding members of our association. This prestigious group includes C. Henry Hottum, Jr. of Tennessee. Under the old Graham L. Davis method of chapter recognition there were four leagues. One was the C. Henry Hottum Jr. League. Subsequently with the change to the existing system of award measures, Henry Hottum’s name has been associated with the award for Educational Performance Improvement.

C. Henry Hottum Jr. was primarily responsible for establishing the Tennessee Chapter of the American Association of Hospital Accountants and served as the chapter’s first President. On November 22, 1952, a letter was sent to Mr.Frederick C. Morgan, Secretary-Treasurer of The American Association of Hospital Accountants in Rochester, New York, on the formation of the new chapter. The twenty-two new applications from this initial meeting brought the National membership total to 1,591 members, partially fulfilling National’s goal of 2,000 members by the end of 1953. In April 1953 the Chapter’s membership had risen to 38, and the chapter treasury contained all of $66.00. By June 23, 1953, C.Henry Hottum, had been appointed a director of National AAHA. Henry Hottum served as National AAHA president for a term of 17 months during 1956-57. The American Association of Hospital Accountants changed its name to Hospital Financial Management Association in 1968 and to Healthcare Financial Management Association in 1982 when its membership exceeded 20,000.

During his term as Chair of AAHA, Mr. Hottum set up the fellowship exam to promote professionalism, revised the Constitution and By-Laws, and upgraded the journal, developed hospital accounting correspondence courses and textbooks. He participated on the committee to select the first paid director of AAHA. He attended many of the early annual AAHA Institutes at Indiana University, subsequently helped the faculty at AAHA National Institutes and served on the national faculty. He helped many of the early leaders thorught the country, especially in the South, in the development of AAHA.

Iry E. Lowrey, also a charter member of the Tennessee Chapter, recalls that Mr. Hottum played a major role in th field of hospital accounting. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, Mr. Hottum established himself as a leader in hospital accounting circles, both in Tennessee and on a national level. He was an advocate of hospital cost analysis and internal cost reports during the early 1950’s. He was one of the first to use the early versions of the American Hospital Association’s uniform hospital accounting system. He assisted in drafting and improving a subsequent AHA uniform chart of accounts that was distributed nationwide. He taught uniform hospital accounting in early sessions of the AAHA national meetings at Indiana University and at Tennessee Chapter meetings. He personally conducted one of these classes in Memphis at his hospital location – Methodist – in 1961; ( Iry Lowrey and I were members of that class).

Each Year the Tennessee Chapter Board of Directors honors one chapter member who has made significant contributions to the Chapter in the field of accounting and business office practices. This award is named in honor of C. Henry Hottum, Jr.

The Henry Hottum Award is named in honor of the first president of the Tennessee Chapter-HFMA and presented each year to the chapter member selected by the Chapter’s Board of Directors who has made significant contributions to the Chapter in the field of accounting and business office practices.

The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) recognizes that its strength lies in volunteers, who contribute their time, ideas, and energy to serve the healthcare industry, their profession, and one another. Active participation in HFMA at the national, regional and/or chapter levels provides members with numerous opportunities for professional development, information, networking, and advocacy. Established in 1960, the Founders Merit Award Series acknowledges the contributions made by HFMA members. These awards are part of a merit-rating plan in which specific activities are assigned a range of point values.

The Founders Merit Award Series was revised in April 2004, returning to its core purpose of “Recognizing the Volunteer in You”. Point categories were adjusted to reflect volunteer activity only – eliminating the accumulation of points for membership and educational attendance. Corresponding point allocations and award levels were simultaneously adjusted.

HFMA encourages continuous active participation at the local and national levels. Therefore, the point system and award levels have been established to promote continuous active participation in HFMA.

The Awards

The William G. Follmer Bronze Award is awarded after an individual has earned 25 (formerly 100) member points. This award is named after William G. Follmer, who is credited with the creation of the American Association of Hospital Accountants (AAHA) (now HFMA).

The Robert H. Reeves Silver Award is awarded to an individual who has earned 50 (formerly 200) total member points. Reeves, an organizing member of the AAHA, was elected president of AAHA in 1956 and was instrumental in creating the structure of AAHA.

The Frederick T. Muncie Gold Award is presented to a member who has earned a total of 75 (formerly 300) member points. This award honors Frederick T. Muncie, an organizing member of the AAHA, and the first president of the association (1947-1949). Muncie also assisted in the organization of the first AAHA chapter (First Illinois).

The Founders Medal of Honor was added in 1986 and is conferred by nomination of the Chapter Board of Directors. This prestigious award recognizes an individual who has been actively involved in HFMA for at least three years after earning the Muncie Gold Award, has provided significant service at the chapter, regional and/or national level in at least two of those years, and remains a member in good standing. A chapter may nominate members for this award at any time during the year.
