Mabel Darko is a dedicated healthcare professional born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. Her interest in healthcare was sparked early in life by observing her mother’s significant role as a stationery supplier to local hospitals. This exposure ignited her passion for the field, prompting her to explore healthcare administration from a young age. Mabel took on internships in healthcare administration, enjoying the intricacies of the processes involved, which led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a major in Healthcare Administration.
Throughout her undergraduate studies, Mabel worked on several impactful projects focused on cost reduction, yield improvements, and process efficiency, which solidified her commitment to making a difference in the healthcare sector. After gaining valuable experience working in healthcare in Ghana, she sought to deepen her understanding of the healthcare system and broaden her skills. This desire for knowledge and growth led her to Georgia State University, where she is currently pursuing a dual Master of Health Administration (MHA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. This program allows her to gain a comprehensive understanding of both the healthcare and business aspects of the industry. Mabel believes in the power of leadership and is actively involved in various roles that allow her to contribute meaningfully to the healthcare community. She serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of GSU Future Healthcare Executives and is a member of the inaugural Student Leadership Committee for the Georgia Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). HFMA Member Advice to Students Transitioning to a Professional Role
My recommendation is for the book “Indistractible” by Nir Eyal.
While we are fortunate to have the advantage of amazing technology to help us navigate our lives a little easier, it’s becoming more and more apparent how distracting these tools can be. The pings, chirps and alerts that we set up to try to make our days more manageable ultimately thwart our very efforts. In a complete 180 from his original book – Hooked – Nir teaches us how to more successfully live with technology by becoming indistractable to it. Any early careerist – or person, in general – can benefit from learning how to make sure your focus isn’t broken when you have a goal in mind!

Organizational skills. Increasingly professional roles are about managing knowledge and information- lots of it! I highly recommend students identify the organization tool offered by their employer and spend some time understanding the functionally. This time investment will pay dividends. If the tool has a seamless interface between the desktop app and the mobile app- even better! When an idea hits you, having an easily accessible recall place is invaluable. Some popular tools include Microsoft OneNote and Evernote.
