Internal Educational Tools

  • Don’t forget your own organization’s internal learning tools. Many of us have databases full of educational content that we can take advantage of. I find that being on top of these courses offers you an opportunity to step up as a leader, as many times the courses may be sharing information on new topics or processes within your organization. When you are at the front end of these new initiatives, others will come to you for information, and this gives you an opportunity to educate others and stand out as a leader.

Real People

  • Surround yourself with people who inspire you and people who demonstrate positive attitudes.
  • HFMA’s mentor group, committees, Community etc. are great places for this.
  • Evaluate your personal circle as well. I find the personal connection to leadership is far more powerful than what I can get from a book or PowerPoint from some leader I don’t know. I follow an old friend on FB who had a 25 struggle with alcoholism and has been sober now for 14 years. He posts positive messages and lessons every single day to show how he is exceling at life, both personally and professionally. The posts are not him bragging, they are posts that provide real examples of how to overcome life challenges, and most importantly to encourage others to just keep doing the small things that will eventually pay dividends to a happier and healthier life. Just be careful looking at FB for things like this, you must know how to manage your time and who you follow so you are not overwhelmed with all the other pitfalls that may encounter on social media sites.

Webinars and Conferences

  • Advisory Board
  • Becker’s
  • HFMA Live Events
  • HFMA Webinars
  • Webinars are often forgotten or overlooked.  In most cases they are free, and you don’t have to travel. Conferences provide a great opportunity to meet leaders, and hear from real people within our industry, such as a CFO panel.
