Massachusetts-Rhode Island Volunteer Opportunities

Massachusetts-Rhode Island Chapter

Welcome!

At the HFMA MA-RI Chapter, every committee plays a vital role in advancing our mission — and we recognize that this work is strongest when it reflects the values we hold as a Chapter. A commitment to recruiting, retaining, and engaging members is at the heart of every committee’s effort. We strive to create meaningful experiences, foster professional growth, and build community for our Members at every stage of their journey.

Equally foundational is our shared dedication to inclusion and belonging. Inspired by the chapter goals, we intentionally design our programs, leadership opportunities, and volunteer initiatives to reflect the diverse communities we serve. This means creating and welcoming spaces where all individuals feel respected, valued, and empowered to contribute. Every committee is encouraged to approach its work through this lens — amplifying underrepresented voices, addressing barriers to participation, and continuously evolving to be more equitable and inclusive.

Together, our Committees embody the spirit of collaboration, learning, and connection that defines the HFMA MA-RI Chapter. I want to encourage you to participate on one of our Committees (see list below), as it is a great way to meet new people, broaden your network and really understand the workings of our Chapter. If you have any questions, please reach out to me or our Chapter Volunteer Coordinator, Emily Anne Jacobstein, at admin@ma-ri-hfma.org. We look forward to welcoming you!

Thank you,

Dhara Satija

COMPLIANCE COMMITTEE

Our Compliance Committee plays a vital role in exploring best practices, regulatory changes, and industry trends to ensure that healthcare organizations remain compliant with key laws and regulations. Through collaboration and education, our dedicated members bring a wealth of expertise and knowledge and work together to coordinate impactful educational sessions, publish thought-provoking content, and share insights and innovative solutions that benefit professionals across the healthcare finance and compliance landscape.

Compliance is a shared responsibility, and together, we can build a stronger, more ethical healthcare environment. We’re excited for another productive year of learning, collaboration, and advancing compliance best practices.

The Committee is charged with coordinating annual webinar and one regional educational conference offered to those in the healthcare compliance industry. The Committee meets virtually approximately 10-12 times a year. During these meetings, the Committee discusses current events and hot topics and prepares for the educational sessions, all while benefiting from shared knowledge and learning from across the industry.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Social Media and Digital Strategy touch every aspect of our chapter! This is an opportunity to have significant influence over the brand of our local chapter. If you enjoy marketing, digital media, writing, editing, or photography, or have an interest in growing one or more of these skills, this is the committee for you. Tap into your creative side!

The Digital Strategy/Social Media Committee oversees maintaining and expanding the Chapter’s social media presence. To accomplish this goal, the Committee meets regularly to develop and enhance processes for creating, managing, and releasing digital media content, including the Chapter blog, LinkedIn posts, Tweets, and Facebook posts. Committee members oversee the creation and solicitation of industry-relevant blog articles. Participants on this Committee have opportunities for business networking and socializing with others who help advance the mission of the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Chapter. The Committee collaborates closely with the Social/Networking, Education, and Sponsorship Committees to raise awareness of the HFMA MA-RI Chapter and promote upcoming events and programs. The expected time commitment is 1-3 hours a month.

EMERGING HEALTHCARE LEADERS

The Emerging Healthcare Leaders Committee focuses on fostering a professional network and increasing industry knowledge for our current and future healthcare leaders. The committee is driven by members who are kicking their careers off to those who may be making a career change to the healthcare industry. The Committee provides an opportunity for members to become better acquainted with HFMA, the MA-RI Chapter and each other, and to network for business sharing, career opportunities, and industry insight.

During the year, the Committee will plan and execute the Emerging Healthcare Leadership Summit and post-program social event in the fall, as well as spring event tailored to both emerging and experienced healthcare leaders community. The committee will meet on a monthly or bi-weekly basis (around the fall and spring events). The meetings will focus on planning and executing events for the “Emerging Healthcare Leaders,” with the continued focus on engagement, inclusion, and belonging.

The Committee will also support the Chapter’s Educational Partnership program by reaching out to local colleges and universities to educate students on the benefits HFMA membership and the Chapter events. Participation may include meeting with professors and students at job fairs or department events. Opportunities for interns will also be explored each year. During the fiscal year, the Committee will contact selected colleges and universities to increase awareness.

HEALTHCARE STRATEGY AND TRANSFORMATION COMMITTEE

This Committee explores emerging trends, innovations, and strategic challenges impacting the future of healthcare delivery and finance. As the U.S. healthcare system continues to evolve, providers, payers, and stakeholders must adapt to new regulations, payment models, technologies, and patient expectations. The Committee focuses on system-wide transformation through a strategic lens, including leadership, market forces, operations, and reform.

Key Focus Areas Include:

  • Exploring strategic healthcare trends across policy, finance, and delivery models
  • Sharing tools and methodologies that improve clinical, operational, and financial outcomes
  • Promoting the use of technology, data analytics, and digital health to drive value
  • Monitoring payment reform and regulatory developments at state and federal levels
  • Highlighting successful models of payer-provider collaboration and care innovation

Committee members contribute to peer-led discussions and the development of educational content, including webinars and in-person events. The group meets every other month, alternating between informal virtual chats with subject matter experts and planning sessions for upcoming programming.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

This Committee is charged with supporting the efforts of the Chapter’s Board of Directors, Officers, and Individual Committees to recruit, retain and engage members for the Massachusetts Rhode Island Chapter.

To accomplish this goal, the Membership Committee has the responsibility to develop strategies to attract new members, ensuring current members are satisfied and active and fostering a sense of community and belonging within the organization. The Committee works closely with the Social/Networking and Education/Program Committees to ensure that activities and programs are aligned with the goals of Membership growth and retention, including the recruitment and retention of young professionals. Activities may include: member engagement socials, social media posts, prospective membership recruitment, membership renewal activities, and outreach to prospective members from non-traditional settings including health care management students and employees in non-hospital settings. The committee is responsible for developing a periodic  analytical review of attendance and engagement and share the trending data with the Board and Program Committees.

By effectively fulfilling these responsibilities, the membership committee will contribute to the overall success and sustainability of the association.

NETWORKING/SOCIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE

This Committee is focused on holding events and creating opportunities for members to become better acquainted with the Chapter, HFMA, and each other, and to network for business sharing, career opportunities and industry insight.

The primary goal of the Committee will be to increase member engagement by planning and executing events that are both fun and conducive to professional networking. Past events have included wine tastings, an “Ugly Holiday Sweater” contest, and restaurant “meet ups.” In addition to planning multiple events throughout the year, the Committee will also be responsible for supporting planning efforts for our annual golf tournament and chapter celebrations. Both of these events have their own dedicated sub-committees. The annual golf tournament brings both golfers and non-golfers to enjoy a fun day with fellow members and colleagues. The annual chapter celebration event recognizes and honors the achievements of and contributions made by our members and volunteers. Monthly conference calls will take place during the course of the year to plan networking / social events.

Committee members will have an opportunity to participate in sub-committees and/or participate in other educational programming committees where social events are in scope for the agenda. Participants on this Committee have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the Organization, its administrative functions, and opportunities for business networking and socializing with their peers and others who have helped to advance the mission of the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Chapter.

Revenue Cycle and Finance Conference Committee (RCFCC)

This Committee is focused on issues relating to all aspects of hospital and physician revenue cycle and financial management. The Committee’s primary responsibility is organizing the annual Revenue Cycle and Finance Conference (RCFC) which typically takes place at Gillette Stadium in mid-January of each year. The RCFC attracts 250+ attendees including 50+ exhibitors to this one or two-day eagerly anticipated event. The Revenue Cycle and Finance Conference includes educational offerings geared towards different focus areas of revenue cycle and financial optimization. We also continue to attract prominent keynote speakers who help frame the healthcare financial landscape. The Committee has members who contribute via Sub-Committees (educational programming, vendor/sponsor recruitment, marketing/social media, and day-of operations). The Committee convenes via conference call approximately every two weeks starting in early summer month and continuing to the event in January. Conference calls are scheduled for 60 minutes (but are often shorter). In addition to the bi-weekly conference calls, Committee members are also expected to research aspects of their Sub-Committee and contribute at the Conference.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

Join other healthcare industry leaders to help develop the Women’s Leadership Conference (WLC). This annual event will present an in-depth review of relevant issues impacting women both professionally and personally. The committee finds new and timely topics each year, featuring prominent speakers discussing topics which have included the following in recent years: authenticity, thriving, emotional intelligence, leading through challenging times, a multigenerational workforce and financial literacy. The goal is to foster leadership among women and empower them to make changes in their own professional world as well as in society at large, which is important to all of us. This committee meets for one hour every other week via virtual meetings from September until the Spring program. The Committee also finds ways to celebrate and amplify women in healthcare leadership roles through social media, blog posts and speaker opportunities.
